Dr. Smiley discusses the weight loss program on 3 Plus You
Host Julie Edwards: If you are among let’s face it, the millions of Americans trying to lose weight and get in shape, but time after time after time, your best intentions seem to fall through without the results you’re hoping for, our next guest is raising her hand saying, “Come and see me.” This is Dr. Jessica Smiley: Smiley Hedrick. She’s a chiropractor in Madisonville, Tennessee. Just about half-way, I guess, between Chattanooga and Knoxville.
Dr. Jessica Smiley: Yes ma’am.
Host Julie Edwards: But you are seeing people from all over the state come your way because you’re the first one to bring something called SOZA Weight Loss our way. This is pretty revolutionary.
Host Julie Edwards: It is. We’re super excited about it for sure.
Host Julie Edwards: So, you are a chiropractor, obviously you’ve seen lots of different types of patients walk through your office doors over the years. Why this particular path to follow?
Dr. Jessica Smiley: Well, ultimately, just to kind of give you a little bit of a foundation of where I came from, Smiley Family Chiropractic and Wellness Center, I am celebrating my 17th year this year and we’re so excited about that. And, through the years I’ve evolved and continued to add or take away things that I find that work best. And, where it all began is, I was 15 years old. I’m a horse girl and late in life getting a horse and you fall off a little bit in the process. And so, lots of pain, lots of trauma and terrible headaches and didn’t matter what I took, didn’t fix it. So, my mom was like, “Why don’t you go to the chiropractor?” Which was odd because our family had never been, and it changed my life and it truly made all the difference for me. So, I really have never slown down, slowed down when it came to helping others after I had the experience for myself. So here we are, and through these past 17 years we’ve added multiple services and techniques to our office, but I’m so excited that we have found something that truly works and that is long-lasting.
Host Julie Edwards: So, let’s talk about this SOZA Weight Loss. It’s nationally acclaimed. You are sharing with me that it’s been highlighted on the “Today” show and other national programming, something like 75,000 people who’ve benefited from it. But it’s not so much a program as it is a method of how to live.
Dr. Jessica Smiley: Correct. So, the whole goal is to help you be healthy so that you can lose fat and lose weight. And so, it’s all about real life and living and the healthy lifestyle. And what I found and what’s different about SOZA in my practice previously is that I would just coach people to eating clean, exercising. But so often they didn’t budge, and they didn’t see the results. So, they got frustrated and were like, “I’m out.”
Host Julie Edwards: Right.
Dr. Jessica Smiley: And so, what is so exciting about SOZA is it utilizes healthy living, healthy lifestyle. Here are the foods you eat. Here’s the recipe book that we give you because you can eat healthily and it tastes good, which is so exciting. But we also have professional-grade products, that make the difference, so they help break this cycle that we’re in with not being able to lose weight.
Host Julie Edwards: Okay. So, let me let the mom and me come out a little bit. So, you think about how you maybe eight as a kid versus how your children now eat as kids. And I’m sure you hear lots of people come into your office saying it just seems like the quality of our food, what’s in our food is different now than it used to be.
Dr. Jessica Smiley: You’re absolutely right.
Host Julie Edwards: So, I think if I understood you correctly, sort of the premise and we’ll show you what these supplements are, is that a lot of us are just walking around in this unbalanced state and even if we try to live clean, it’s not enough to do the job. Is that kind of it?
Dr. Jessica Smiley: You are correct. Although me growing up, I think about what I ate and now knowing what I know, that wasn’t the best thing, shall we say, so it’s all about our fresh fruits and vegetables, our lean meats, there’s no preservatives, there’s no artificial flavors, colors, there’s no pre-packaged. It’s really just about real food, which is not what the majority of society eats anymore. Everything’s coming from a box, a bag, a can. So, we shift that.
Host Julie Edwards: Okay. So, you learn how to go to the grocery store the right way. Then you have the cookbook that your whole family can benefit from. But if, let’s say, a mom is the one who comes in to you first and she wants to lose some weight and nothing’s worked for her, that’s where you can try these supplements with her but the whole family is benefiting from the clean eating.
Dr. Jessica Smiley: You bet.
Host Julie Edwards: Okay. So, I’m going to hold up some supplements and you share with me what makes them so unique. Can we do that?
Dr. Jessica Smiley: Yes.
Host Julie Edwards: So, what is this one?
Dr. Jessica Smiley: So really quick, that is our lean product and basically what that’s doing is that is increasing metabolism and curbing appetite. So, you’re not going to feel jittery. We’ve had hundreds of people utilize this, of course thousands overall, but I’ve had no one, “Oh my gosh, I’m shaky, I’m jittery, I can’t do that.” Because some products that increase metabolism make you feel weird.
Host Julie Edwards: Okay. It’s like a…
Dr. Jessica Smiley: A stimulant and that is not the case with this.
Host Julie Edwards: Okay. Is it like affecting insulin resistance and that kind of thing?
Dr. Jessica Smiley: All these products are going to help with insulin resistance, inflammation and hormone balance. And what I’ve found is that hormones being out of balance is such a big reason why it’s hard for us to lose weight.
Host Julie Edwards: Okay. This one.
Dr. Jessica Smiley: That is the homeopathic combination. So those are a mixture of homeopathic components that are specifically designed to reset your set point. So, it works with the hypothalamus, the pituitary, which is all about hormones and metabolism.
Host Julie Edwards: Who is the SOZA, who came up with SOZA Weight Loss?
Dr. Jessica Smiley: SOZA was a group of chiropractors and osteopaths that actually created a real healthy way to lose weight.
Host Julie Edwards: So, they have the medical background and they kind of combined and put together these various things to create this magic formula.
Dr. Jessica Smiley: Correct. Correct.
Host Julie Edwards: And this last one.
Dr. Jessica Smiley: That is again, professional-grade B12 it is methylated so anyone can take that. It is a chewable. But again, that’s going to help increase metabolism, that’s going to help nerves, that’s going to help with inflammation as well.
Host Julie Edwards: So, if you come in and you do the program, do you necessarily do all three of these or it’s individualized for each patient?
Dr. Jessica Smiley: Everything will be individualized, although what I found as I’ve not had anyone yet in my office that didn’t need all three.
Host Julie Edwards: Okay. Then you brought this lovely pound of fat.
Dr. Jessica Smiley: I did.
Host Julie Edwards: You can expect to lose one of these a week.
Dr. Jessica Smiley: You’re gonna lose a pound on average, no more. Excuse me. On average between two weeks, you’re gonna lose between 8 and 15 pounds the first two weeks of your plan. So, on average you might be losing a pound a day.
Host Julie Edwards: Do some people come into your office and to look at them, they might not look like they have that much weight to lose, but they really do?
Dr. Jessica Smiley: It is correct. It is true.
Host Julie Edwards: So, once you hit that first 8 to 15 pounds, those first two weeks of weight loss, then do you kind of plateau or does it keep on going?
Dr. Jessica Smiley: No. But it keeps people excited because we start a weight-loss program. We don’t see change. We’re done. We’re frustrated. Why am I torturing myself by eating these blueberries that I don’t really love so much?
Host Julie Edwards: Right. Okay.
Dr. Jessica Smiley: I will say…
Host Julie Edwards: So, I know that you are midway between us and Knoxville. So for folks who want to make the drive and say, “Look, this is the plan I’ve been looking for, this sounds right for me,” how often will they come to see you?
Dr. Jessica Smiley: Well, there is your initial consultation. We go over everything in detail so there are no questions, there’s no surprises after you leave, you know, you are fully equipped and confident. We are, Dr. Danielle and I, are available via text, email, phone conversations. So, we are your accountability team. So, we’re available for you anytime you need us. Although on average we will meet with you, we will go over everything in detail, in 30 days we weigh in. I want you weighing every day. If you see yourself get stuck, if there’s a question or concern, I want you messaging me right away.
Host Julie Edwards: Okay. So, you don’t have to be coming up frequently, just about once a month but in the meantime, if you have questions, you’re available right there.
Dr. Jessica Smiley: You bet.
Host Julie Edwards: Okay. Let’s get you to her. It’s Smiley Family Chiropractic. But SOZA Weight Loss is what she’s really focusing on this morning. You will find her if you want to drive up 4793 New Highway 68 in Madisonville. Their phone number 442-2100. And then online
